Blog spam is definitely a problem and I don’t want to pretend it isn’t, and anti-spam plugins like Askimet are great plugins. But, if you are moderating comments on your blog, you need to make sure you are flagging true spam as spam with Askimet, and deleting questionable comments.

Link Building to Bring Traffic - Part 1

You may think your site is the best thing on the planet, well maybe it is, but if people don’t know about it and can’t see it, then the money and time that you have invested into it are worthless. Building a powerful online presence is much more than building a great website.

Being popular on the internet is much more than basic web knowledge, you need to know how to deal with search engines, and know something about link building.

Traffic building and link building has changed over the years. One of the first thing you would do would be to submit your site to search engines. Some still recommend that, I don’t. I prefer to let the search engines find me, with a little help.

FYI, I would never pay a service to submit my sites to the search engines.

Directories:

Since linking from a directory will help your ranking and get you more traffic, be sure to list them in free Open Directory Projects like DMOZ, which is maintained by human editors. The problem with getting listed in DMOZ is it can take years or it may never happen and you’ll never know why your weren’t listed.

This hierarchical directory provides content feeds to all the major search engines. Plus, it provides a link to your site from an information hub that Google deems important.

Yahoo! Directory is another important directory to be listed in, but it does cost money. Real humans will read and too often, pare down your 200-character sentence, so be very careful and follow their instructions.

Use less than the maximum number of characters allowable, so you don’t have wordy text that will tempt the Yahoo! editor to begin chopping.

You may find some directories focused on particular industries, such as education or finance. Be sure to register with these. You probably belong to various trade associations that feature member sites.

Ask for a link. Even if you have to pay something for a link, it may bring you the kind of targeted traffic from an info hub you need. Be careful though, as Google punishes those who actively sell links from their site.

Beware of directories that solicit you for “upgraded listings.” Unless a directory is widely used in your field, your premium ad won’t help, but the link itself will help boost your PageRank and hence your search engine ranking. Marginal directories come and go very quickly, making it hard to keep up. Don’t try to be exhaustive here.

Practice reciprocal linking. Find complementary websites and request a reciprocal link to your site, especially to your free service, if you offer one. Develop an out-of-the way page where you put links to other sites, so you don’t send people out the back door as fast as you bring them in the front door.

Your best results will be from sites that get a similar amount of traffic to your site. High-traffic site Webmasters are too busy to answer your requests for a link and don’t have anything to gain. Look for smaller sites that may have linking pages.

Only do reciprocal linking with sites that you think are consistent; do not do reciprocal linking with spam sites because this will naturally damage your site’s reputation. There are also directories that ask for reciprocal linking in return for your listing.

You can also make a trade of benefits in your reciprocal linking. If a site is really in theme with your site, ask for a front page – top page listing and have it done for them too. This way you will generate more traffic for each other.

Commenting on DoFollow blogs is one of the most productive link building method right now. I suggest you comment on blogs listed on the DoFollow Blog Directory. If you need a better understanding of what dofollow blogs are, I suggest this dofollow blog information blog.

social bookmarking is one of the hottest Web 2.0 online trends.  The concept of social bookmarking is about 10 years old, but due to it’s recent explosive growth, it has just now become one of the new internet “buzz words”.

It’s important for internet marketers to understand social book marking and how it can help them promote their products and services.

So, what is social bookmarking?  What is social bookmarking’s purpose?  Why is social bookmarking important to internet marketers?

What is social bookmarking?
You are probably already familiar with bookmarking web sites, that you want to visit again, using your Internet Explorer or Firefox web browser. The bookmarks you create to these sites are for your personal use and are stored on your computer.

social bookmarking is the next step in bookmarking, where you and others can share bookmarks to web sites you think may be of interest to others. This is done via social bookmarking services. After you have signed up for the social bookmarking service, you will be allowed to register a website, site description and tags (keywords) with the service - this is a bookmark. You will also be allowed to share this bookmark, or you can keep it private (depending on the service). This information is stored by the social bookmarking service, and is not stored on your computer.

What is social bookmarking’s Purpose?
There are really two major purposes behind social bookmarking.

1.  The main purpose of social bookmarking is to have people with like interests bookmarks sites that they think would be useful, or interesting, to others who have the same interests.  For example, I love fly fishing.  Let’s say I find a site that contains some great custom-built fly fishing rods for an inexpensive price.  I would bookmark that site with one of several possible bookmarking services.  I would give the site I’m bookmarking a title, a description and tags (keywords) related to inexpensive custom built fly fishing rods.  I would make sure the bookmark is set to public so others could find it, and would then have have created a social bookmark.

Now when people search the social bookmarking service, using the tag words used to define the bookmarked sites, they are presented with a list of related sites.  Using our fly fishing example above - When someone searches for “fly fishing rods” they would be given a list of related sites, including the custom fly fishing rod site we bookmarked.  Most bookmarking services also have a rating system so the most popular sites are at the top of the list.

2.  Another great benefit of social bookmarking is, once you have social bookmarked your favorite sites, you can easily find those bookmarked sites from any computer connected to the internet.  You simply log into the online social bookmarking service and find the website you bookmarked.  This can be very helpful if you have many websites you like to monitor, when you are away from home and you are not at your primary computer.

Why is social bookmarking important to internet marketers?
Since social bookmarking sites are generally very popular sites that get a lot of traffic, they have high Google page ranks and are visited often by search engines. Submitting your site to the social bookmarking services, increases the chance your site will be crawled by the search engines. I have seen my sites crawled by Google only one day after registering my site to social bookmarking services. 

Submitting to social bookmarking services is also a great way to get one way, incoming, high page rank links coming to your website which helps increase your page rank. 

But most importantly, if your website is seen as having value to a group of people, your bookmark can be rated highly and can create a ton of very targeted traffic to your website.

social bookmarking is growing at a phenomenal rate and if you want to market on the internet, you need to add social bookmarking to your set of internet marketing tools.

I recently took part in an online blog discussion about a new internet marketing ploy that seems to be taking hold.

It’s suddenly become popular to claim to be “going against the gurus”, “revealing things to you that the gurus don’t want you to know”, or claiming to not be an internet marketing guru.

This marketing strategy has worked very well for a few recent product launches, even though I would say these product launches were done by gurus.  So, I started thinking about why being anti-guru suddenly has such strong appeal to the “average” internet marketer.

Here are some of my thoughts and comments.  I welcome your comments below. 

Are internet marketing gurus in general developing bad reputations?  Or, are “average” internet marketers just jealous of the success the big gurus have had?  It’s probably a little of both.

Yes, I believe there are some internet marketers that are jealous of the gurus.  I know internet marketers who have been working for years, doing the right things, but still have not reached that full time internet marketer guru status.  So, there is bound to be some jealousy there.

It’s my opinion that it has become almost impossible to break into this elite guru internet marketing circle, unless you have an extremely hot new product that none of the gurus have seen before.  The competition to market to internet marketers, which is a large part of what you’re being taught to do, is just too much.

So part of the anti-guru sentiment is the view that the gurus are an elite closed group that is very hard to get into.  A closed group that is about building their personal empire with no thought of really helping anyone outside of the group.  A closed group who works together on projects and product launches.  A group of strong JV partners with large lists, that almost guarantees launch success regardless of the product.

The other thing that I think has hurt the reputation of the big gurus are some recent very high cost product launches, that nearly all of the gurus pushed.

Some recent membership launches asked for fees of $400 - $800 PER MONTH.  In my opinion that is outrageous.  For $800 per month you should be doing most of the work for me.  This may not be much money for a guru, but it’s huge to the struggling internet marketer - it could be a house payment.  This pricing alienates a lot of could be customers.

Did the gurus have to pay for the product/membership before promoting it like you would be required to do?  Probably not, gurus get many perks that you don’t.

I believe the general internet marketer population are becoming tired of constantly being pitched by the gurus.  They are you tired of being pitched on the same product by all the gurus.  They are tired of email subjects like “Don’t buy ThisGreatProduct” and then in the email they are offered the bonuses of the century if they buy ThisGreatProduct from the guru.

Are you tired of working so hard at this IM business and being left on the outside looking in at the guru circle.  When was the last time one of the gurus asked you to be a JV partner on a launch with them?  Probably never because you have not made a name yet.  A catch 22 - you may have a great product, but no name and so no JV opportunities with the gurus.  But if you had those guru JVs you may be able to finally make a name.

And what about product launches?  By the time you hear about product launches from one of the gurus, your chances of making many sales are slim because the gurus have already emailed their list of internet marketers.  They have a big head start on you.  Many times getting the product for free, and having marketing strategies in place before you ever even know the product exists.

So, I believe a number of gurus have to take responsibility for much of the anti-guru appeal. 

I find myself being more skeptical of the gurus and more open to the unknown, or little known marketers.  I’m finding more real information from the non-gurus than I find from many of the gurus with their slick marketing packages.

So what do the rest of us do?  Do we keep struggling forward trying to crack that elite circle?  Do we keep buying from the gurus so they keep making money while we keep spending more than we make?

Should we give the little marketer a closer look?  Should we form a non-guru coalition and buy from each other and not the gurus?  Should we JV with each other and help each other out? 

I don’t have the answers, I’m just growing tired of a large portion of the internet marketing “guru” community.
